Get out of that comfort zone - I am so glad I did!
At the start of 2026, I joined the board of ICF Ireland - The Irish Chapter of the International Coaching Federation as the Director of Marketing and Communications.
Yesterday, this newly formed board welcomed 70 coaches to our first in person event that was more of an interactive learning experience than a traditional โsit and listenโ event.
With a new board, a new audience etc. - People did not know what to expect, many did not know anyone else there and chatting to people over coffee later in the day, the sentiment was consistent โI was so busy this week, I wasnโt going to comeโฆ but I am so glad that I did."
โฆ I met people who are in the same boat as me and I feel less alone
โฆ I have a notebook full of ideas and inspiration
โฆ I learned a new skill today that I can bring into my work
โฆ I feel so energised
โI am so glad that I didโ was the phrase that I heard over and over. It got me thinking about the importance of not letting โshouldsโ over take what you really need. Creating the formula you need to get out of your comfort zone is a great use of your time - This may be a goal, an accountability partner, a mantra etc. What is important is that you are investing time in learning new skills, perspectives and lessons to continue to keep growing and expanding.
Our brains are designed to keep us safe. We will always be busy. We will always have reasons to stay in our routine. It is proven in neuroscience that the amygdala in your brain sees any uncertainty as danger and starts to SHOUT all the reasons why you should not.
To overcome my own internal voices and loud logical reasons to stay safe, I have my own positive reminder that I use โฆ โYou will be so glad that you didโ .... And by pure chance, this is the phrase I heard shared over and over.
Yesterday, I was out of my comfort zone in so many ways and hearing this phrase echoed around reminded me to take a moment to acknowledge my courage for showing up and giving my best to build this community.
What could your counter voice be the next time your fear monsters start to shout?
This visual is my favourite articulation of the tension that exists between wanting to do something and actually doing it - It takes a step into the unknown to step into the Learning Zone but ultimately, for me it is important that I donโt spend my life between the Comfort and Fear Zones.
This topic always needs the reminder that our comfort zone is not bad. It is important - Your comfort zone is the place you go to rest and recharge...but not to get so cosy that you never want to leave!
Are you ready to build some adventure into your life and get into your learning zone?
Start very practically, with two steps........
Reflect on what you need more of - Is it community, skill learning, network building etc?
Add one commitment to your calendar that will move you into your desired learning zone. Book the ticket, set up the call... make it a real, non-negotiable (not the 100% fictional and movable calendar blocks)
