How to Know If You're Ready to Work With a Coach?
It usually starts with a feeling before you can even find the words to explain it. On paper, everything looks like itโs working. Youโre keeping all the plates spinning, but underneath it all, something doesn't sit right. You find yourself overthinking decisions, hitting overwhelm, and second-guessing your instincts.
Your plate is already full, so you ignore that inner voice telling you something needs to change. Finding support feels like another massive task on an already overflowing to-do list. You tell yourself it will pass, but the weeks tick past and you feel trapped in a reactive cycle of just surviving the day-to-day.
If you are sitting at that crossroads right now, letโs untangle what coaching actually is, when it works best, and how to know if you're ready to take that next step.
What is a coach?
There is a lot of noise out there, so let's simplify it. A coach isn't an expert who swoops in to tell you how to live your life. You probably donโt need more advice anyway.
Instead, a coach's fundamental role is to create a safe, non-judgmental space and give you the structure to feel in control and confident in your decisions.
As your coach, together we work to:
Replace "should" with "could" and explore all your options. (Trust me, there are always more than you think!)
Listen deeply to your intuitionโitโs usually in there, just drowned out by the noise.
Get crystal clear on what you need right now and what could be next for you.
Nudge you to take small, intentional steps forward, prioritizing trial and error over perfection.
When would you benefit from a coach?
People generally come to me when they find themselves at a crossroads in their career or their life. Change brings a complex, messy mix of emotionsโit is entirely normal to feel powerless, stuck, excited, or nervous all at once.
Everything is welcome in the coaching room. If you come perfectly curated, there is nothing for us to work on!
If youโre trying to figure out if you're ready, look out for these three common patterns:
You feel overwhelmed: Life keeps throwing curveballs, your reliable structures have evaporated, and you have no view of the bigger picture.
You feel stuck: Youโre trapped between the sensible choice on paper and what you actually want, leading to endless overthinking.
Youโre navigating a specific transition: A career shift, company redundancy, recovering from burnout, or returning from extended leave.
Finding a coach to support you through these pivotal moments shifts you from panic and survival to curiosity and conviction.
What is the best time to work with a coach?
Here is the ultimate paradox of coaching: When your plate is full, thatโs exactly when it works best.
In my experience, most people seek coaching too lateโwhen they are already exhausted and defeated. At my own big career crossroads, I look back and wish Iโd had an active coach by my side. Now, Iโm on a mission to be that partner for others.
When you are drowning in a busy schedule, adding another appointment feels completely counterintuitive. Your brain tells you, "I'll look into it when things quiet down." But when does life ever just automatically quiet down? Waiting for life to be perfect before you get support is a trap.
I don't want you to show up to our sessions perfect and polished. The more chaos, the better.
My job is to get in the trenches with you, create the breathing room you desperately need, and untangle the mess together. You donโt need a clear roadmap to start; you just need to decide that you refuse to stay where you are.
How can I get started?
Taking the first step can feel intimidating - How do I pick a coach? Will I get the results I hope for? What if we don't connect?... Actually, I am too busy to think about it... (More to come on these topics in a future post)
But good news. Like everything in life, it doesn't have to be all or nothing.
If you are coaching curious and feeling a craving for the space and structure to think, I have a solution for you.
You are invited to give coaching a try in a completely low-pressure, supportive environment.
Turn Fear to Fuel is a one-hour session that I have designed to give you a genuine taste of how coaching works. Itโs an hour completely dedicated to youโoffering you some immediate, hard-to-find space to think clearly and help you separate what you feel you should do from what you actually want to do.
