Dare to Dream -Create new year’s resolutions that sticks
Imagine I give you a free hour and a blank page to create your vision for the next phase of your life. What do you think would happen?
For most of us, one of two things occurs:
Passion and Energy: You fill the page immediately, your dreams shouting to be heard, tired of being ignored - This space to dream is so long overdue.
Overwhelm and Procrastination: You freeze, not knowing where to start, getting distracted, or “maybe another day - The page is too blank and daunting.
Neither outcome is good or bad; it is simply information. Life today is go, go, do, do. We are not used to having space to reflect and dream and so it has become our stretch zone. Space to dream can feel indulgent or even scary. And yet, I believe updating your vision and dreams to meet you where you are today, is the best time you can invest in yourself.
Taking time to reset your dreams is the key to living a fulfilled, authentic life.
Imagine, it’s January and you are setting some new years resolutions. Most often, you look back at the previous year and update from there for the coming year (that often you haven’t looked at all year). But wait, did they serve you? Are they still relevant….. Without zooming out, we end up stuck in an infinite loop, creating our own Groundhog day movie… living the same year, over and over.
Building plans based on what was important to us in the past is outdated, and not respecting the wisdom and experience you have gained. To truly dream, you need to lift your head and start zoomed out.
Instead of starting with a blank page, let’s make dream building a little easier. Set a timer and challenge yourself to sit and scribble for 30 minutes. Here are some journalling prompts to get you started:
Looking back, when did you feel most energised and alive?
What were you doing, and who were you with?
If you could make one big, bold change in your life with guaranteed success, what would it be?
What is important about this change?
What does "living authentically" look like for you today?
Describe one small shift you could make this week that would align with that vision.
What do you need MORE of and LESS of in your life right now?
Be specific about energy, time, relationships, and habits.
When you imagine your future self 5 years from now, what is the single most important decision they credit for their happiness?
It takes immense courage to dream. Give yourself credit for investing this 30 minutes in yourself!
It can feel vulnerable to admit that you have a bigger dream. For some, the dream is big and dramatic and can cause upheaval in your current life. For others, the dream can be a quiet, yet profound shift inside of them. When a dream comes out, it can be shocking even to the person who has been holding it inside. Exploring your dreams is not about perfection, but curiosity. Any step towards what you are craving will leave you feeling more fulfilled and energised.
Most often, when a new client comes to me for coaching, they are in a moment of change in their life and they are struggling with a decision because they don’t even recognise themselves anymore. What worked for them up until now is no longer working. This is a real signal that they are ready to re-imaging their dream and make sure that their vision for their life and themselves is caught up with their lives. We always start with the dream……. Everything falls into place from there.
Remember this sobering truth: The number one regret of people dying is that they did not live authentically. Those who are brave enough to dream are not waiting to be filled with regret.
Don’t let your own fears and schedule get in the way of living the life you deserve.
If you are now craving space to dream, you can join an upcoming Dare to Dream workshop, where I will take you through a creative process step-by-step (Find the next workshop dates here).
This workshop is playful and exploratory to overcome some of the fear and overwhelm dreaming can bring. You will enjoy the process. The only thing you need to bring with you is a curious mind and a free 60 minutes and I will take control from there.
